Some notes on the projected lineup:
- There are a few educated guesses in there, most notably the last one: Damar Hamlin at cornerback. It's very possible Ryan Lewis will open the season as the starting cornerback opposite Avonte Maddox; at the very least, Lewis will hold that spot when training camp starts on Monday.
But the Pitt coaches have high expectations for Hamlin and, given his pedigree, he looks like the most likely option to win the starting job in camp. It's wise to consider that even Jordan Whitehead had to wait to move into the starting lineup (even though he only waited one game). But Hamlin has at least as good a chance to be a starter as Whitehead did.
- The Star linebacker position will also be determined in training camp, but Bradley will get a shot at it after spending 2015 splitting time with Mike Caprara at the Money position. Bradley has a lot of things the coaches want: the skill set to play Star (a hybrid outside linebacker/strong safety) and plenty of experience. The biggest thing he needs to do is step up in training camp and win the job.
Given that his primary competition will be a converted safety, a converted receiver and a redshirt freshman, he should have the edge heading into camp.
- On the preseason two-deep, Dewayne Hendrix is listed as the backup defensive end behind Rori Blair, but the guess here is that the redshirt sophomore transfer from Tennessee claims the spot by the end of camp. He's got as much upside as anyone at the defensive end position.
- Free safety will be another training camp battle to watch. Reggie Mitchell and Terrish Webb both have plenty of experience - Mitchell started all 13 games in 2014, while Webb has started 17 of the 19 games he played in the last two seasons - and the coaches like what both players bring to the free safety position. Mitchell started the season opener last year before missing the bulk of the season due to injury, during which time Webb replaced him.
The slight edge goes to Webb since he has more experience at free safety in this defensive scheme, but the most likely outcome is that the coaches use both players throughout the season (as long as they are healthy).
