Pitt picked up its second wide receiver commitment and second prospect from the state of Florida in the 2017 recruiting class when 6-foot-2, 197-pound Dontavius Butler selected the Panthers program over offers from North Carolina State, Temple, and Toledo, among others. Butler hails from Plantation (Fla.) and a big-time national program at American Heritage that has produced star players like Marco Wilson, Torrance Gibson, and Kyshaun Bryan in recent classes.

In a pure recruiting sense, Butler filled for a definite need for wide receivers in the Pitt recruiting class, but his role should go beyond filling a roster spot. Pitt was looking for a receiver who was big enough and physical enough to be a presence on the outside and Butler looks to check off some of the boxes in categories they were looking for.
