Jordan Whitehead will miss the rest of the regular season, Pitt head coach Pat Narduzzi said at his weekly press conference Monday.
Whitehead, a sophomore safety from Central Valley, injured his right arm making a tackle out of bounds in the third quarter of Pitt’s 43-42 win over Clemson Saturday. Team doctors had him leave the field on a cart; when he returned to the sidelines later in the fourth quarter, Whitehead had an air cast on his right arm.
“We did lose a guy for, at least, the next couple of weeks. I don’t usually talk about injuries, but with a guy of Jordan’s significance, you saw him with a blowup bag on his arm, so it’s probably no secret that he was not going to walk back out this weekend.
“He’ll be fine. We hope to have him back for a bowl game. Don’t know when that will be, but he’s doing well there.”
Before his injury, Whitehead recorded nine tackles, seven of which were solo stops. After playing nine games this season - he did play against Marshall - Whitehead leads Pitt with 65 total tackles. He led the Panthers in tackles last season, and this year he also recorded one fumble recovery, two pass breakups and an interception he returned 59 yards for a touchdown at Virginia.
With Whitehead out, redshirt senior Reggie Mitchell will start the final two games at strong safety. Mitchell started in place of Whitehead against Marshall and has played as a reserve in the other nine games this season.
The Whitehead injury also moves redshirt freshman Jay Stocker closer to the field; he has played in eight games this season on special teams, but he will be the primary backup to redshirt senior Terrish Webb at free safety.
