Wannstedt makes a decision on the bowl game

Dave Wannstedt has decided that he will coach Pitt for one more game.
In the days since the announcement that Wannstedt would no longer be the Panthers' head coach, multiple sources told PantherLair.com that Wannstedt planned to lead the Panthers in the BBVA Compass Bowl at Legion Field in Birmingham, Ala., on January 8.

On Thursday, defensive coordinator Phil Bennett said as much during a press conference in Birmingham to promote Pitt's bowl matchup against Kentucky. Wannstedt did not make the trip to Birmingham.
Wannstedt formally resigned from Pitt on Tuesday after serving as head coach since December of 2004. Athletic Director Steve Pederson said Tuesday night that Wannstedt would have the option of coaching the bowl game, but Wannstedt has not given the University a final decision.
After the bowl game, Wannstedt will move into a University position that is being called "special assistant to the Athletic Director."
In six years at Pitt, Wannstedt compiled a 42-31 overall record. The BBVA Compass Bowl will be Pitt's third consecutive bowl appearance. The Panthers lost to Oregon State in the Sun Bowl following the 2008 season and defeated North Carolina in the Meineke Car Care Bowl last year.
Pederson is currently conducting a national search to find Wannstedt's replacement.
