Under the Lights is a series of articles focusing on Pitt's commits in the 2017 recruiting class as they go to work for their high school programs. The opening weekend of the season began for many teams as August comes to a close.
The high school season kicked off across America for many programs across multiple states this past weekend. While some states may have gotten an early start to the festivities, the final weekend in August is the standard start of the season for most high school football players. The commits in Pitt’s 2017 recruiting class were in action as they took on top competition across the states of Pennsylvania, Ohio, Alabama, Florida, and New Jersey.
The following list records Pitt’s commits and their performances in alphabetical order by last name. The article's thumbnail comes courtesy of LehighValleyLive.com.
Panther-Lair’s Chris Peak reported that Montgomery (Ala.) Park Crossing linebacker Cameron Bright has recorded three sacks (accounting for 15 lost yards total) and 11 tackles across his team’s first two games to date – Alabama gets an early start to the season. Bright has pitched on the offensive side of the ball as well, gaining 21 yards on three carries. Bright’s Park Crossing squad is 1-1 on the season and you can find highlights from his first two games at the following links: August 19th vs Jefferson Davis; August 25th vs Lee.
Dontavius Butler informed us that he picked up two catches for 20 yards. While the stats are not overly gaudy, Butler did make a critical haul for the Plantation (Fla.) American Heritage Patriots. With the Patriots holding a 17-14 lead over Colquitt County as time wound down to just 2:30 left on the clock in the fourth quarter, Butler moved the chains for his team on third down with 15 yards to go. The catch gave the Patriots a fresh set of downs and allowed them to run out the clock as they held on for the victory.
Grant Carrigan was asked to play offensive tackle and defensive end for the Pine-Richland Rams as they took on Lakewood (Ohio) powerhouse St. Edward’s on national television. While Carrigan will play tight end at Pitt, he’s expected to continue at tackle and end for the Rams this season. It was a tough loss for Pine-Richland, but Carrigan contributed three tackles, including a tackle for a loss.
Kirk Christodoulou resides in Australia and does not take part in the American high school football season.
Owen Drexel’s season has not yet begun, but Pitt’s offensive center commit will debut on Friday, September 9th in an away contest. Drexel and the Mounties will take on Passaic County Technical Institute, a team that features a Pitt recruiting target at offensive tackle Carter Warren, a personal friend of Drexel’s.
Paris Ford’s regular season has not yet begun, but the Pitt commit (who’s expected to play safety in college) scrimmaged against the Clairton (Pa.) Bears and five-star cornerback Lamont Wade. While no official stats were kept, Panther-Lair subscribers can read Rivals.com Mid-Atlantic analyst Adam Friedman’s evaluation of the event at this link.
Gabe Houy, a Pitt commit at offensive tackle, has not yet started his senior season. Houy and his Upper St. Clair (Pa.) teammates will begin the festivities on Friday, September 2nd against local opponent North Hills.
Kyle Nunn had a picture-perfect start to the 2016 season as he and the Findlay (Ohio) Trojans rolled over Anthony Wayne High School for a comfortable 31-0 win. It was a dominant night for Nunn, as the athlete who’s slated to play linebacker at Pitt racked up an impressive 10 tackles and a sack on the defensive side of the football. On offense, where he plays a combination of tight end and H-back for the Trojans, Nunn recorded eight receptions for 118 yards and a touchdown. You can find highlights of his performance at this link. More clips from the game as a whole that feature Nunn (who wears number 19 in white) are embedded below.
Kenny Pickett, Pitt’s quarterback commit out of Ocean Township (N.J.), has not officially started his senior season like most New Jersey prospects. However, the dual-threat signal-caller was able to make a big impact in a scrimmage against Lakewood (N.J.). Pickett was able to sit out for most of the second half as his squad racked up a quick 28-6 lead. In his limited performance he still posted two touchdowns and over 200 yards through the air, while carrying the football for another 70 yards and a touchdown. His season will begin on Friday, September 2nd against Monmouth Regional (N.J.). You can find Pickett’s preseason highlights at this link.
Much like his fellow Pitt commit Kenny Pickett, Tyler Sear was able to relax after just a half of football as Neshannock (Pa.) dominated Farrell (Pa.). Neshannock operates a primarily run-based offense and with the Lancers dominating to the tune of a 42-14 win, they didn’t need to pass much. Still, Sear accumulated 55 yards on two receptions. On the defensive side of the ball, Sear contributed six tackles from the defensive end position.
Todd Sibley has been one of the best running backs in Ohio for the past few seasons and he has no intentions of slowing down any time soon. Sibley began his senior campaign with the Akron (Ohio) Archbishop Hoban Knights as they look to reclaim their rightful spot and repeat as state champions. It didn’t take long for a statement to be made as the workhorse tailback toted the rock 30 times for 175 yards and a touchdown (which is embedded below and came from 48 yards out). The Knights rolled over the storied Canton (Ohio) McKinley Bulldogs program to the tune of a 42-14 victory. This was an excellent start for Sibley and his partner in the backfield, quarterback Danny Clark, as they work towards another state title.
Darian Street was expected to build up to a larger role for Bethlehem (Pa.) Liberty this season as a senior wide receiver and the Pitt legacy recruit has certainly not disappointed to date. Liberty brought home a big win (by a score of 42-21) over East Stroudsburg to open their season and Street was instrumental in the result. In addition to hauling in receptions of 54 and 17 yards, Street added a 92-yard punt return touchdown. He’ll be a threat to make plays all over the field for Liberty this season. You can watch Street’s highlights from the East Stroudsburg matchup at this link. Below is a video of Street discussing the opening win of his season with Lehighvalleylive.com, sporting some Pitt gear as he does so.
Albert Tucker was unable to be reached for comment or statistics on his performance, but his Ft. Lauderdale (Fla.) St. Thomas Aquinas squad was stunned on opening weekend by fellow Florida powerhouse Booker T. Washington. The game ended in controversial fashion as Ohio State wide receiver commit Trevon Grimes was ruled down on the one-yard line in what many believed was the go-ahead touchdown with under a minute left to play. The Raiders turned the ball over on an interception on the next play and fell to their opponent. They were considered by many to be the top team in the country.
Panther-Lair’s Chris Peak had an update with Worthington (Ohio) Kilbourne two-way lineman and Pitt commit Carson Van Lynn following his team’s opening weekend win over local opponent Olentangy (Ohio) Orange. The Kilbourne Wolfpack brought home a 29-28 victory as Van Lynn contributed on both sides of the ball. Orange largely ran away from Van Lynn when he played as a defensive end in third down and red zone packages, but he was effective as an offensive tackle, bearing the brunt of the responsibility as the lead blocker in zone runs.
