Pitt's regular season ended with a wild game and an 8-4 record, and now the Panthers have done something for the first time:
They are in the College Football Playoff rankings.
In the final rankings of the regular season, Pitt checked in at No. 25. It was the first time in the three-year history of the CFP rankings that the Panthers have broken into the top 25.
While Pitt is new to the rankings, the Panthers know some familiar faces from the top 25. Four Pitt opponents are also ranked this week, including three in the top 10: No. 3 Clemson, No. 7 Penn State, No. 10 Oklahoma State and No. 23 Virginia Tech.
Pitt went 2-2 against those four teams, beating Clemson on the road and Penn State at home and losing at Oklahoma State and at home against Virginia Tech.
Pitt's 8-4 record matched last year's regular-season mark, giving the Panthers back-to-back 8-win regular seasons for the first time since 2008 and 2009.
