Pitt lands New Jersey linebacker

Pitt added a linebacker to the 2024 recruiting class Thursday morning when Red Bank Catholic (NJ) three-star prospect Davin Brewton committed to the Panthers.

Brewton chose Pitt over offers from Maryland, Northwestern, Syracuse, West Virginia, Marshall, UMass and Tulane. He visited Maryland and Syracuse this spring, but his scheduled official visit to Pitt for the weekend of June 22-24 was the only official visit he had set up.

In 2022, Brewton was a big part of Red Bank Catholic’s 10-2 record. He was the team’s leader in tackles (108 total), tackles for loss (15) and sacks (4) while also recording one interception and a fumble return for a touchdown.

That followed his performance in 2021, when he recorded 119 tackles and 10 tackles for loss.

At 6’1” and 230 pounds, Brewton sees himself as a classic middle linebacker in a 4-3 defensive scheme, and when he visited Pitt in January for Junior Day, he had an extended film session with linebackers coach Ryan Manalac to learn about how he would fit with the Panthers’ defense.

“I can see myself in that defense, with the scheme and the personnel, I really fit,” Brewton told Panther-Lair.com in April. “They have a true middle linebacker position and they want a middle linebacker who can cover but be hard-nosed, make big hits on the running back and blitz to the quarterback. They want a dog in the middle.”

Brewton is the first linebacker to commit to Pitt in the class of 2024. The Panthers signed three linebackers in the 2023 recruiting class and are likely to look for a similar group at the position in 2024.

Pitt now has 11 total commitments in the class of 2024.
