- Pitt entered the game ranked No. 25 in the season's opening AP poll. Bowling Green's last win over a top-25 team came in the 2003 season-opener at Purdue, head coach Gregg Brandon's first game.
- Pitt outgained Bowling Green 393-254 in total yards. In the first quarter alone, Pitt had a 137-6 edge in total yards.
- The Falcons scored 27 of the game's final 30 points. Turnovers played a big part in that. Pitt turned the ball over four times, leading to 14 Bowling Green points.
The first time
- Several Pitt players either made their first start, or played in their first career game:
- Shariff Harris and Aundre Wright made their debut on the kick return games. Wright made his first return, a 15-yarder, in the second quarter. Harris returned a kick 11 yards in the second quarter, playing as one of the upbacks.
- Robb Houser and Cedric McGee made their first career starts on offense. McGee tied for the team lead with six receptions, which set a new career-high. His previous best was at Syracuse in 2006.
- Greg Romeus, Jabaal Sheard, Austin Ransom, Jovani Chappel, and Dom DeCicco all made their first career starts on defense. Ransom led the team with seven tackles, including 1.5 tackles for losses. DeCicco finished third on the team with five stops.
- Max Gruder, Brandon Lindsey, Greg Williams, and Buddy Jackson made their debut Saturday, playing on punt return. Williams later played at the strong-side linebacker spot after Adam Gunn left the game with an injury. Nate Nix was the first to fill in for Gunn, but after one series, Williams took the snaps. Williams came up with a hurry on Bowling Green quarterback Tyler Sheehan that forced a Bowling Green punt. He led the team with two quarterback hurries.
- Aaron Smith and Jonathan Baldwin made their Pitt debuts on offense, at receiver. Baldwin had a pass thrown his way on his very first collegiate play.
Offensive notes
- Bill Stull attempted 50 passes today, the most since Tyler Palko threw 50 passes in the 2006 regular season finale against Louisville. Stull also threw for 264 yards. Pat Bostick was the last Pitt quarterback to throw for over 250 yards; Bostick threw for 298 against South Florida in 2007.
- McGee set a new career high with six receptions today. Nate Byham also set a new career high with five receptions. His 52 receiving yards was the second-best output of his career.
- Derek Kinder, who also had six catches, caught his first touchdown pass since Sept. 30, 2006 against Toledo.
Defensive notes
- Sheard's sack of Tyler Sheehan in the third quarter was the first of his career.
- Ransom, in his first career start at linebacker, also had his first career interception.
Special teams notes
- Conor Lee's streak of consecutive points after touchdowns now stands at 77, after he converted both attempts on Saturday.
- Romeus' blocked extra point was the first of his career.
