After a breakout junior season, local 2018 Central Catholic defensive back Khalil Weathers is hearing from Pitt and others. Could the corner be a late-blooming Power Five prospect?

2018 standout Khalil Weathers is beginning to pop up on recruiting radars for Power Five schools around the region. After a pair of switches – moving from running back to full-time defensive back and transferring from North Catholic to Pittsburgh (Pa.) Central Catholic – Weathers has seen his status as a recruit totally change.

“Kentucky has been wanting to come talk to me lately and then I’ve been talking with Syracuse, Pitt, Delaware, and a handful of other schools,” Weathers said. “I’m just waiting for one of them to pull the trigger [on an offer]. I'm really open to all schools now though, I'm just looking for an opportunity."

As a 6-foot, 185-pound cornerback who started for Central Catholic this season, Weathers quickly impressed coaches with his ability to make plays on the football and turn and run in coverage. For one Pitt assistant, the change in Weathers’ abilities was noticeable enough that he informed the young corner of how much his standing had improved. Weathers would like to hear more from the Panthers.

“I talk with coach [Rob] Harley, he comes to our school a lot. I’ve seen him a few times at practice and he’ll watch me there. He said me didn’t like me much when I was at North Catholic, but he likes what I’ve done at Central. I’ve got the Pitt gloves on right now, I love Pitt,” Weathers said. “This is where I want to be, I just want them to pull the trigger. Narduzzi is a really good coach. He brought them back into the top 25 rankings. They played and beat Clemson, who won the national championship.”

The breakout junior season was exciting for Weathers and he could feel the difference personally before it was visible to the outside world.

“I feel great. Going to Central was a great choice for me and the coaches there are excellent. They really shaped me as a player and on my technique. They worked with me on my feet, how I open up, my make-up skills, coverage skills, ball skills – everything is so much better,” Weathers explained. “It was a really good season for me and I feel like it was better for me as a defensive back. I’m focused on next year now.”

Part of that focus on next year is constantly staying sharp and working to improve. While weight room work is important to improve physically, Weathers has also been competing in offseason training and 7v7 work with 2/10ths and Evolve in Pittsburgh’s South Side.

“[7v7 season] is great because it keeps my muscle memory up and it keeps that in tune all year round as a football player, at least for me,” said Weathers. “At Central, you want to come in knowing you’re good for the season. You don’t want to have to get better and work your way up during the season. You have to go in with confidence, have your spot, and keep fighting. Training here at 2/10ths with Wayne and Von keeps me sharp all offseason and ready to go when I put the pads on. I give them a ton of credit."

While his lone offer to date is still from Kentucky Christian, it’s only a matter of time until FBS programs begin coming after Weathers. He’s a quick and long corner with burgeoning coverage skills.
