Kiski Area WR following his dream

Joey Brungo plans to create his own form of the adage about "hard work meeting opportunity" over the next four years. Rather than creating luck, he intends to create success.

The Kiski Area receiver decided recently that he will walk on at Pitt in 2014, and from there, he intends to take things into his own hands.

"I'm using it to my advantage: I think I can go in there and work hard and use it as motivation and give myself the best chance to prove myself," Brungo told Panther-Lair.com. "I feel under-recruited, so I'm going to get down there, work hard and give myself a good chance of earning a scholarship."

Brungo, 6'1" 185, drew interest from some FCS schools, but he had a productive career at Kiski. In 2013 he had 37 catches for 426 yards and five touchdowns, and he finished his career as the all-time leading receiver in Kiski Area history. He was a first-team all-conference selection as a wide receiver in 2012 and a first-team all-conference selection as a defensive back in 2013.

Brungo was a four-year starter on both sides of the ball and on special teams as a returner, and he thinks he'll be a receiver when he gets to Pitt.

"That's what they want me to do and I like receiver, but I'll play anywhere," he said. "Whatever gives me an opportunity to play, that's what I'll do."

Brungo came to the attention of the Pitt coaches when he attended the Panthers' prospect camps over the last two years, and after viewing his senior film, they decided to give him the opportunity to be a preferred walk-on. For his part, Brungo didn't need to take too long to make a decision.

"That's always where I wanted to go," he said. "I grew up watching Pitt and it was always my dream to play for Pitt. My family went to Pitt, my sister goes there now and dives for them, and I just always wanted to go there and play there.

"After Coach (Bobby) Engram told me about being a preferred walk-on, I thought about it a little bit. But then I knew I didn't want to go anywhere else; that was where I wanted to go. I wanted to go there and be where I would enjoy my four years. And I wanted to give it a shot to accomplish my dream of playing at Pitt."
