Medical conditions will prevent five Pitt players from participating this season, including two players whose careers are finished and a third who could join that group.

Pat Narduzzi announced on Friday that Justin Moody, George Hill, Zack Gilbert, Chris Clark and Mike Grimm are all inactive this season due to medical conditions.

Moody, a redshirt junior defensive tackle, suffers from a non-football related cervical spine condition, and he will no longer be able to play. He will remain with the team as a student assistant.

Hill, an incoming freshman who was a four-star prospect out of Hubbard, Oh., has been diagnosed with a pre-existing cardiac condition that will prevent him from playing football again. He will remain on scholarship as a permanent medical exemption.

Gilbert, another incoming freshman, was also found to have a cardiac condition. He will be inactive this season and be re-evaluated to determine his future participation.

Clark suffered a knee injury in spring camp and underwent offseason surgery. He transferred to Pitt from UCLA in January and would have missed 2016 due to transfer eligibility rules.

Grimm had surgery on his hip this summer and will not participate.

“Each of these young men are very passionate about the game of football and our heart goes out to them,” Narduzzi said. “Although they will not be able to play this fall, each of them will remain an active and important part of our family. They are, and will always be, Panthers. We are going to make sure they continue to benefit from a University of Pittsburgh education and being an important member of our football program.”
