Southwest Stuns Steele

SCHERTZ- The traditional medieval tale ends with a knight slaying a dragon. The story traveled down a different path Thursday night, with the Dragons of Southwest High School (2-0) taking down the Steele Knights (2-1), in a defensive thriller that came down to critical defensive stops by both teams in the waning moments of the game.

Steele looked to control the game early, but key mistakes kept the Knights out of the end zone until near the end of the first quarter and it certainly did not help to have future Sooner Sheldon McClain on the shelf. Quarterback Nick Sergent ended the game with a meager nine yards rushing, yet two touchdown runs of 89 and 49 yards in the first half were called back because of penalties behind the play. With 8:30 left in the 2nd quarter, the Knights scored their 2nd and last touchdown, when the Knights botched the often overlooked point after attempt.

Southwest fought back, With Tre'vion Johnson rushing, and an Adrian Guerra 27 yard reception, the Dragons breathed life back into their offense. Johnson scored from 28 yards out to light up the scoreboard for Southwest. Johnson contributed the Dragons' second touchdown with another run of 31 yards, and when was all said and done, had finished with 251 yards.

While larger point victories may be easier on their hearts, Johnson and the Dragons relish with the chance to have been able to grind out a game, especially against a favored team such as Steele. "We faced adversity, but we've got to practice, look at the tape and stay focused. We've got to be able to keep our heads going and stay positive."

Even with the huge game himself, Johnson does not take all of the credit for himself. "For everything that I do, half of it I give to my offensive line, the defense, everybody. We are a family. We are a big united family. I'm just blessed to have them on my side supporting me."

Both teams will take off next week, with their respective bye weeks and will be back to begin district play in week 4. Southwest will face Laredo Martin (1-0), while Steele goes up against the Rattlers of San Marcos (0-1).
