Rutgers forward transferring to Pitt

Jamie Dixon made another addition to the roster Sunday when 6'9" Rutgers forward Derrick Randall decided to transfer to Pitt. Panther-Lair.com confirmed Randall's decision Sunday night.

In addition to Pitt, Randall was considering Minnesota, Iona and Wagner for transfer destinations. He visited Pitt last week and liked what he saw.

"My visit to Pitt was really good," Randall told Panther-Lair.com. "I really enjoyed the campus, players, and coaches. They told me about how they lost a couple of guys in the frontcourt and how they have a role for me. That is one of the things I am looking for so that was good to hear.

"I kind of felt at home with Coach (Brandin) Knight, (redshirt freshman) Chris Jones, and (true freshman) Mike Young. It felt like a Playaz reunion a little bit and that made me comfortable."

A native of New York City and a former member of the New Jersey Playaz AAU program, Randall was recruited lightly by Pitt out of high school. He had offers from DePaul, Providence, Virginia Tech, Seton Hall, South Carolina, St. Joseph's, and St. John's as a member of the 2011 recruiting class when he signed with Rutgers, but he did not have a significant role in Piscataway and has decided to transfer after the coaching change there.

Out of high school, Randall appeared poised to be a solid contributor at a high major due to his size and physicality. That didn't happen at Rutgers, but now he'll get another chance to show what he can do.

"I am ready to prove myself as a player and show people that I can play. I want to make an impact somewhere and earn a significant role. I did not get to show what I am capable of in my first two years."

Under NCAA transfer rules, Randall has to sit out the 2013-14 season, after which he'll have two years of eligibility. Given the situation at Rutgers, though, he could get a waiver and be eligible immediately.
