Pitt-PSU series extended
The renewal of the Pitt-Penn State series will have two more years, as Pitt announced Friday that two extra dates have been added to the previously-scheduled games.
The Panthers and Nittany Lions will meet in Pittsburgh on Sept. 8, 2018, and in State College on Sept. 14, 2019. Last year, the two schools announced that they would meet in 2016 and 2017, marking the first time Pitt and Penn State faced each other in football since Sept. 16, 2000.
"It would be hard to find a college football fan anywhere who is not excited about this announcement," Pitt athletic director Steve Pederson said in a press release Friday. "As one of the greatest rivalries in college football history, a further extension of the Pitt-Penn State series is special. I am very appreciative of Dave Joyner's interest in getting this done and I have really enjoyed our conversations on this and other matters. This is a great day for the players, for the fans and for the entire state."
Pederson has maintained that renewing the Pitt-Penn State rivalry is a priority. Penn State has been at the top of Pederson's list of future non-conference opponents, and at last year's announcement that the series would start again in 2016, he expressed a desire to extend the games beyond 2017. Friday's announcement adds two more games to that deal, and Pederson will likely pursue additional games for Pitt's future schedules.
In the last meeting between Pitt and Penn State, the Panthers won 12-0 in a game played at Three Rivers Stadium. Penn State leads the series 50-42-4 and has 17 of the 23 games played in State College. Pitt's record in home games against Penn State is 34-28-4.
The Pitt-Penn State series began in 1893, and the two schools faced each other every year from 1900-31 and from 1935-92. The series took a four-year break after 1992 before resuming for four games from 1997-2000.
