Pardner to miss rest of the season
Jahmahl Pardner will have surgery to repair a torn ACL this week and will miss the rest of the 2012 season, Panther-Lair.com has confirmed.Pitt freshman cornerback
Pardner, 5'11" 170, suffered the injury in Pitt's 35-17 win over Virginia Tech at Heinz Field on Saturday. He appeared in all three games this season on special teams and as a nickel-back, recording three tackles, one sack, and one forced fumble.
Because his injury happened in the third game of the season, Pardner should be eligible to apply his redshirt to this season via medical waiver. NCAA rules allow for a medical waiver if the player has appeared in four or fewer games and has a redshirt available.
Pitt has some precedent with the medical waiver. Redshirt senior safety Andrew Taglianettiplayed as a true freshman in 2008 but tore his ACL in the second game of the 2009 season and received a medical waiver to apply his redshirt.
Similarly, in 2007, offensive lineman Jason Pinkston suffered a season-ending shoulder injury in the third game of the season. Because he still had a redshirt available - Pinkston played as a true freshman in 2006 - he applied for a medical waiver and used his redshirt that year.
Pardner signed with Pitt as a three-star prospect out of Rochester (NY) Aquinas Institute. He is one of four true freshmen to play for Pitt this season, along with running back Rushel Shell, tight end J.P. Holtz, and defensive tackle Darryl Render. With Pardner on the sidelines, Taglianetti will likely be the primary nickel-back in Pitt's defensive sub-packages.
