Wannstedt out as Pitt head coach

The Dave Wannstedt era at Pitt is over.

Wannstedt's tenure as head coach of the Panthers came to an end on Tuesday, sources confirmed to PantherLair.com.

A native of Baldwin, Pa., Wannstedt was hired in December of 2004 and coached Pitt to a 42-31 record in six seasons. That included a 9-4 record in 2008 and a 10-3 campaign last season. This year, though, the Panthers were preseason favorites to win the Big East and ranked in the top 15 nationally, but Pitt stumbled to a 7-5 finish.

Among this season's losses were a 30-28 defeat at Connecticut and a 35-10 blowout at the hands of West Virginia at Heinz Field. Pitt did finish with a share of the Big East championship, but those two losses put Pitt behind the Huskies and Mountaineers in the tie-breaker column.

Wannstedt met with Athletic Director Steve Pederson on Tuesday.

The Panthers earned an invite to face Kentucky in the BBVA Compass Bowl in Birmingham on January 8. Sources indicated that offensive coordinator Frank Cignetti will coach the team in the bowl game.
