WR Jones closes in on a decision

Tony Jones of Grand Blanc High School is the top wide receiver prospect in Michigan for the class of 2010 based on SpartanMag.com rankings. The 3-star prospect, and #12 player overall, is getting ready to make his college choice. Jones has an impressive list of scholarsghip offers which includes the teams that are seen as the front-runners, Michigan State, Stanford, Missouri and Northwestern.

At one point Jones has talked about making his college selection in September or October, but with football season about to get started, Jones has had a change of mind.

"I am planning on committing within the next week or so," Jones said. "I am ready to get the recruiting process over so I can focus on helping my team win a championship my senior year."

SpartanMag.com was able to watch Jones perform at the Michigan State Elite 1-Day Camp earlier this month. At that event, Jones showed not only the ability to gain separation from defensive backs, but also was able go up and get the ball.

SpartanMag.com asked Jones if he remembers what his numbers were as far as testing at the Elite Camp.

"Yes, I measured in at 5-foot-11, 175-pounds, he said. "I ran my forty yard dash in 4.42 and 4.40 seconds. I got a 9'10 on my broad jump and my vertical was 35-inches. I was a little disappointed because I only got one chance to jump."

Those numbers put Jones in an elite category when it comes to overall athletic ability.

As has been reported in the past, Jones is good friends with Spartan quarterback commitment Joe Boisture. The two players grew up participating in football and basketball together. SpartanMag.com asked Jones if there were any other Michigan State commitments that he knows.

"I have met Mylan Hicks, Tony Lippett and Nick Hill," Jones stated. "They all seem pretty cool. I definitely feel I would fit in well with them."

Jones is also friends with a player that the Spartans are hoping to add to the 2010 class on the defensive side of the ball.

"I know Dior Mathis too. We go way back. Dior and I used to run AAU Track when we were younger."

You can be sure that if Jones does decide to join the Green and White he will be making contact with Mathis to try and get him to join him in East Lansing.

As far as a favorite, Jones is playing things close to the vest. He hopes to be a sports agent if he is not playing on Sundays and plans on majoring in business and or communications in college. Having solid programs in both fields certainly cannot hurt a schools chance with him.

As far as how a decision could go down, Jones indicated that he might have something at his school if that can be set up or he might just contacts the respective schools and let them know. No matter how he decides to make his final decision, one school is going to be very happy.

If Jones does join Michigan State it will give the Spartans an impressive trifecta. With Boisture, Hill and Jones, the Spartans will have a top rated player at each skill position.

SpartanMag.com will be sure to keep in-touch with Jones in the coming days.
