Kerns shines for departed grandparents

FREDERICK, Md.--As he prepares for his upcoming senior season at Thomas Johnson High, many things propel West Virginia committed superback Terence "T.K." Kerns.

One finds him reading online daily to find out about the best times and statistics of some of the other better sprinters and running backs in the nation.

Another has him attending a Senior Camp at Maryland, "because I like to match up with some of the guys there. I like the competition," he said. (T.J. head coach Ben Wright said the Terrapins no longer are recruiting the running back who comes from the same school as produced former Terp linebacker Leroy Ambush.)

Finally, the third may be the most powerful. As summer begins and Kerns finds himself at camps like last weekend's MdVarsity.com Passing Jamboree at Tuscarora High and the one upcoming at Frederick, he is pleading with his single Mom, Tammy Thompson.

And this request, Thompson, a Frederick native, may behest on her only child -- a tattoo.
