Washpun still an option?
On Saturday, Wes Washpun was all smiles after Cedar Rapids Washington picked up a much needed win over Sioux City East in Des Moines at Wells Fargo Arena. The flashy point guard has been facing tough competition this week and he was glad to walk away with the victory. He's also gaining plenty of recruiting attention these days, including interest from the Hawkeyes.
"It was a big win after a loss to Linn Mar last night. We needed to bounce back and get another win and finish up the season strong," Washpun said.
As the Warriors push towards the finish line this season, which he hopes will include a return trip to Des Moines in early March, Washpun will wait until his senior campaign wraps up before putting his full attention on where he will attend college next year.
Based on his stat sheet stuffing numbers, the offers will certainly start to roll in as we close in on the April signing period. Thus far this season, Washpun is averaging 18 points, 4 assists, 3 steals, and 2 blocks per game from the point guard position. Those type of numbers have caught the eye of several high major programs.
He currently holds scholarship offers from North Dakota, North Dakota State, South Dakota, and South Dakota State. Those numbers could be on the rise soon.
"Iowa and UNI are interested," he said. "Missouri State has been talking to me a lot. I've also been hearing from Boston College, Clemson, Creighton, Wichita State, and Nebraska."
Washpun says that Iowa assistant coach Kirk Speraw has been in contact on a regular basis with him.
"I think Iowa is still in play," he said. Coach Speraw has been calling me, but I am not sure what their situation is right now as far as offering a scholarship."
One other option for Washpun could be a year at prep school or junior college. His academic performance has improved a great deal in the past year and Washpun feels that he should qualify. If he doesn't those alternatives could be on the table.
Right now, the senior guard is putting recruiting on hold and doesn't have a favorite school.
"I am still pretty wide open right now. I haven't narrowed it down. I am probably going to wait until after the season and then narrow it down, take some visits, and then try to make a decision."
