Hokies host big visitor

Virginia Tech had an important visitor on campus Tuesday. The trip is likely the last visit for the prospect before a decision comes. Find out more on the trip inside.

"It was really good," Roanoke (Va.) Cave Spring safety Michael Cole said. "I kind of decided to go back up for a visit one last time before making my decision in the next couple weeks.

"I was just up at Penn State recently and I got to see everything up there. I just had a couple questions left on Virginia Tech. One was the academics, I hadn't talked to them, I got everything figured out and finalized. I talked to the coaches and got to know them a lot better. I also got a feel for where they are seeing me in the program."

The visit was primarily an academic one and Cole discussed what he took away.

"I was very impressed with what they have to offer," he said. "They have a lot of people involved with the well-being of the student athletes. I also got to talk to the team doctor, that was important too for my down the road aspirations. I want to go into pre-med and maybe be a doctor one day. Talking to him, he reiterated how he can help me reach medical school. That was important to hear.

"I got to go back and meet with the academic people, all of that was beneficial to me. I got to see how it matched up in that regard."

Of course, it wasn't all academics as Cole did spend some time with Tech's coaching staff.

"It was good," he said. "I sat down with Coach Foster and Coach Cavanaugh face to face about where they plan on playing me. They see me potentially at a lot of positions on defense, free safety, strong safety, whip and maybe even inside linebacker. They like my versatility on the field. Getting to talk to them, I got to hear how much they wanted and needed me in the program.

"I did talk to Coach Beamer too. I sat down in his office and talked to him. Once again he just reiterated how much they want to have me in their program and how they think I can contribute in the future."

Cole added that he is now focused on two schools following the trip.

"Penn State and Virginia Tech are the two top schools on my list," he said. "I think they are both very similar in what they have to offer academically and football wise. They are great institutions; Penn State as well as Virginia Tech both have medical schools that I could go to. They provide academic support and both are very intriguing. They also have great coaches in Coach Beamer and Coach Joe Paterno. You can't go wrong with either school. Now I just have to sit back and think where I fit in best."

Cole maintains no decision has been made at this time and discussed his plan from here.

"I think right now I'm going to take a couple weeks to think," he stated. "I'm going to the beach next week with my family and then after that I'll come up with a decision. Between Virginia Tech and Penn State it's going to be a tough decision."

Cole mentioned a lot about the Hokies, what about the Nittany Lions?

"You know, Penn State is one of the best football programs out there," he said. "Joe Paterno is a coaching legend and I'm impressed with Penn State and the relationships the coaches have up there. I like the kind of people they are; friendly and they expressed a want for me like Tech did. Penn State is exactly what it is, a great school and a great place to go and be part of a strong football program."

Cole is eyeing a specific decision date.

"I think I'm planning on making my decision on August 2nd," he said. "Between now and then I just have to kind of sit with my family, think about what schools are best for me and not necessarily for anybody else. I've got to feel it and feel at home, and find where I'm going to fit in best."
