Despite taking visits previously to Virginia Tech, Saturday's trip to Blacksburg was different for safety Michael Cole. This time around the 6-foot-3, 198-pounder held an offer from the school.
"It was a good visit," he said. "I got to see a lot of people compete at the camp. I saw them running around and got to talk to Coach Foster a bit and see him during the linebacker drills get after it."
Cole visited Tech back in April for spring football, was there anything different this time around now with a scholarship in hand?
"I guess it was just different in that everybody knows who I am now," he said. "I'm not a guy who has to prove anything. I'm getting to know the place better and the coaches better."
Speaking of getting to know the coaches, Cole spent time with Tech's head coach, Frank Beamer along with a number of assistants.
"We talked at the end," he said. "He just said how he really wanted me up there and it would be good for me to come in January because I'll still have the five years. Whether I play early or not, I could have the possibility of playing early if it all worked out.
"I talked to Coach Stinespring a lot too along with Coach Cavanaugh and Coach Gray, the defensive backs coach. It was just great to get to know them better."
A big part of the visit for Cole this time was to clarify the greyshirt offer further.
"I think it's a great thing actually," he said. "It seems to be nothing of a downgrade at all and better in a sense. It gives you that extra semester to improve yourself and then five years after that.
"It's a great thing with the limited scholarship offers for them to get me here."
So, did the visit do anything for the Hokies?
"Yeah, I think it kind of did," he said. "I understand the greyshirt better now and coming back here definitely peaks my interest. It was really a great experience and helps me make my decision in the next couple months."
Before that happens, Cole plans to try to earn more scholarships.
"I'm going to go to a lot of camps and visits coming up," he said. "I've got Virginia next weekend on the 12th, Duke on the 19th and Penn State possibly in July. It's possible I'll go to Vanderbilt for camp too.
"I plan on trying to make my decision certainly before the season and possibly by the end of July."
The Roanoke (Va.) Cave Spring prospect maintains Tech and Duke are his two leaders at this point in time.
"Those are my two offers, but we'll see if I get more in the next couple weeks," he said. "I kind of really want the Penn State offer. It's a big football team and that would be big."
