You know the times are changing when a football prospect can learn a college is recruiting him via e-mail. That is exactly how Plantation (Fla.) wide receiver Cedric McGee learned the University of Florida verbally offered him.
McGee (6-1, 187 pounds) said that Plantation head coach Frank Hepler told him in May that UF head coach Ron Zook sent him an e-mail informing Helper that McGee had a verbal offer.
Since then McGee said he has received written offers from Pittsburgh and Auburn, as well as verbal offers from Florida State, Boston College, Rutgers, Connecticut, Iowa, Oklahoma State and Central Florida.
"Right now Florida State is No. 1, N.C. State is No. 2, Florida is No. 3, Miami is No. 4 and Pittsburgh is No. 5," McGee said. "I grew up liking most of these schools and all of them are big-time programs."
The reason the Seminoles are out front right now is because McGee has done his homework on the Seminoles, but also has been a long-time fan.
"They were my favorite team growing up," he said. "When I look over teams, I look at their depth charts and see what it will be like when I get to college. So I look at it like that and see they have a lot young receivers and they have some seniors leaving at my position this year."
McGee camped at N.C. State this summer and that is the main reason they are No. 2 on his list. UF checks in at No. 3 for McGee because "they throw the ball a lot."
McGee still hopes to hear from Georgia and Oklahoma before the recruiting process ends.
"I am waiting until Signing Day before I make a commitment," he said.
McGee is close to teammate Jeff Owens, who is also a Division I recruit. Owens' recruiting is more active than McGee's right now, but the two still talk about recruiting and the possibility of playing at the same college.
"We talk about it every now and then, but he wants to go to Miami," McGee said.
McGee said he hasn't talked much with Miami, but knows it is still a long way until Signing Day and more teams could jump into the picture, making the decision even tougher.
"Wherever my heart tells me to go, that is where I am going," he said. "I don't know to tell you the truth, but it will probably be how the program's prestige is and the coaching staff. I am just going to break down every school that I am interested in and look at their depth charts. Then I am going to talk to my parents and coaches about it and have them help me out with it."
