Malcolm Gilbert is leaving the Panthers. The transfer was announced Thursday night in a press release.Pitt's roster will be short a center next season, as sophomore
"Malcolm has asked for his release and has informed me that he wants to play with his brother," coach Jamie Dixon said. "He's a great kid, hard worker and good player. We thank Malcolm for his contribution to our program over the last year and a half and wish him much success in the future."
Gilbert's brother, Marcus, is a freshman forward at Fairfield University in Connecticut.
As a true freshman at Pitt last season, Gilbert played in 19 games, scored in five of those games and grabbed at least one rebound in nine games. He was named a Big East Academic All-Star and earned Pitt's Academic Excellence Award at the team banquet.
Gilbert was redshirting this season while freshman Steven Adams starts at center and senior Dante Taylor serves as the primary backup. Gilbert's departure will leave Pitt light at the center position for next season.
Gilbert came to Pitt as part of the recruiting class of 2011. Also in that class were Khem Birch, Durand Johnson, and John Johnson. With Gilbert's transfer, only Durand Johnson is still on the team from that class.
Gilbert is just the latest player to transfer from Pitt. John Johnson left in November, while guard Isaiah Epps transferred in April. Birch left last December, and forward J.J. Richardson transferred last April.
