Will Louisville turn to Harper next?
Jeff Wafford
CardinalSports.com Kevin Harper, a kicker from Mentor H.S. in Ohio, may be getting close to picking up his first scholarship offer. Louisville told the 5-foot-11 prospect that he was the second kicker on their wish list, and news broke this weekend that their first choice had committed to Florida. What's next for Harper? Cardinalsports.com spoke to him to find out...
Harper has gotten attention from several schools thus far in the recruiting process, but like many kickers, he is stuck in a holding pattern waiting on a scholarship offer. "I'm number one (on the list) at Pitt right now, but they're waiting to see if its going to be a greyshirt offer or a redshirt offer," Harper said.
That waiting game also has Harper waiting for schools including Ohio, Kent State, Louisville and West Virginia, although some of the dominoes might be starting to fall into place. Louisville's supposed number one target, Caleb Sturgis, made a decision this weekend.
"He just went to Florida," said Harper Sunday night. "I kept an eye on that and I read about it." With the Cardinals' number one kicker off the list and U of L's All-American kicker Art Carmody set to graduate after this season, the likelihood of an offer for Harper may be growing.
"I'm going to e-mail them later this week," Harper said. "They said when I talked to them that they had already offered that kid from Florida, and that I was behind him on their list."
Why would the Cardinals be an attractive situation? "I like that they play in the Big East. That's big time football, and I also like they have a good team," he answered. "That doesn't really matter that much as a kicker, but it's a bonus. That, and I would get a chance to play as a freshman."
Harper's leg strength was evidenced just last week. "I made a 60-yarder last week off the ground" he said. "That's my furthest. Like five of my high school coaches were there and I asked them if they thought I could do it. Then I did. I made it by about a yard and a half."
Harper said when he gets his first offer he would like to make a decision before the start of his senior season.
