Gerhart makes switch; will sign with Sun Devils
Norco (Calif.) center Garth Gerhart has informed ASUDevils.com that he intends to sign a National Letter of Intent with Arizona State on Wednesday, after earlier being verbally committed to Colorado. Gerhart made the call at 12:30 p.m. PST, several hours ahead of teammate Adam Tello's decision to commit to ASU.
"I felt most comfortable at ASU," Gerhart said on the switch. "I went there (on an official visit) and just felt like it's where I could see myself. I talked to my brother and he said 'Just go wherever you felt most comfortable.' At ASU I really felt like I got along with the coaches and players. That's ultimately why I decided to sign there."
The 6-foot-1, 300 pound Gerhart is ranked by Rivals.com as the No. 7 center in the nation, and the No. 61 overall prospect in California.
He had been verbally committed to Colorado since August, but informed the school's coaches earlier in the day Tuesday that he would be signing with ASU.
"That was the hardest part out of all of it," Gerhart said. "I just felt real bad because I've been committed there for a while. They were very good to me and didn't recruit any other center in the class because of how much they wanted me, but I felt like I had to make the best decision for myself.
"The last few weeks have been very stressful. I didn't know what I was going to do at times. Adam and I are best friends but we made our decisions on our own. I don't know when he told ASU he was going to go there this afternoon but I did know. But my decision was about doing what I felt was best for me separate from his decision. It was just a good coincidence that we both felt like that was the best fit."
