Florida OT interested in Spartans?
Michigan State is looking to add at least 2 quality offensive tackles to the class of 2013. One of the players the staff has been in contact with is Shawn Curtis of Olympia High School in Orlando, Florida. SpartanMag.com has some details on his recruitment and where the Spartans stand.
Michigan State is being very active in the state of Florida this recruiting season and one of the players that is on the radar is the 6-foot-5, 270-pound Curtis. The rivals.com 3-star prospect already has a solid list of scholarships and is poised to pick up more once his senior season starts. SpartanMag.com spoke with Curtis and asked him about his contact with the Spartans.
"Yes, I have heard from Michigan State, he stated. I actually made it up there for a game last year. I was at the Central Michigan game and I liked what I saw up there. I am going to call my recruiting coach (Brad Salem) tomorrow and speak with him."
Curtis has a solid list of scholarship which includes offers from BCS teams in the ACC, SEC, Big 12, Big East and Big Ten. In all he has over 15 scholarships offers on the table. We asked him what his top choices are and where the Spartan stand.
"Right now of the schools that have offered I like Mississippi State, North Carolina State, Syracuse and Iowa State, in no particular order, Curtis said. If Michigan State were to offer me they would be in my top 5 for sure."
The fact that Curtis has favorites from all over the map means that distance will not be a factor in his recruitment
"No, it (distance) will not be an issue, he stated."
One of the interesting aspect of Curtis' recruitment is he will have the option to graduate early and enroll in December. That means he will have an entire year and a half of development, assuming he redshirts, before he will begin using his playing eligibility. That extra semester has benefitted Spartan players like Tyler Hoover and Peter Clifford in the past.
Though he plans to enroll early, Curtis is not in a hurry to make his college choice. He made a trip this summer to visit schools like North Carolina, NC State, Duke and Wake Forest. He would like to take a couple of official visits early this fall to allow him to learn more about several programs, especially those that are a bit further away.
SpartanMag.com will continue to follow-up with Curtis in the near future. We expect that the Spartans will want to see his film from his first 3 games. If his film looks solid, the staff could look to have him up on an official visit. The Spartans like athletic offensive tackles and Curtis could be the answer.
