Hokies in the picture for star recruit
With spots dwindling, Virginia Tech's numbers are getting tighter. The Hokies continue to be in the mix for a number of prospects including one player that claims Tech is moving back up his list.
"I was going to go to a couple colleges this summer, but never got around to it," Charlotte (N.C.) Ardrey Kell tight end Drew Owens said. "Right now I'm going to focus on the first couple games of the year and then see how I'm feeling. After that, I'm planning to take all five of my officials. I won't commit until I'm done with my officials."
According to Owens, he has cut his list further.
"I still have my top five, those are firm, there might be a six with Virginia Tech in there too," he stated. "It's the same old schools, Arkansas, South Carolina, Clemson, North Carolina, NC State and then Virginia Tech.
"I'm really looking at Virginia Tech now. They will probably be one of my officials. They've just started sparking my interest. I've been looking at their letters and watching a couple of films, they are good as a team and good at Beamerball. I don't see anybody beating them in the ACC anytime soon."
Currently Owens claims he is on the verge of scheduling his officials.
"I'm planning to do it with my coach pretty soon."
The 6-foot-5, 227-pound tight end hasn't been in touch with many of the schools so far, only contacting NC State and South Carolina recently.
Do any schools stick out right now?
"South Carolina has always been on my list since the beginning," he said. "They've been the most consistent and I know the most about them."
Even though recruiting is picking back up, Owens is focused on the season and two-a-days which start on Sunday.
"We have really big expectations this season and are expecting nothing less than a state championship," he said. "We're big on winning our conference which means beating Butler and Independence.
"We've had a huge change in our coaching staff and they've been pushing me really hard, forcing me to be a better ball player. The coach plans to use me a lot more, but I want to go out and prove this season I can beat double teams and zones."
